Challenge 2: Peekaboo Family Inspiration Challenge

Challenge 2 is sponsored by Scrappity-doo-dah.com and was a fast forward, which we didn't even try to attempt.

For this challenge we had to select two background papers, one for the very back and another one for the top. We had to resize, tilt, et c., this front paper so that the back paper was visible. We chose one photo for the layout and crop it to 3" by 3" and place this either in the center of the page or somewhat off the center if you choose.

Next we had to use a shape tool to add at least three shapes of any s hape above the top paper layer and then delete these shapes so the bottom layer showed through. I used a heart shape near the upper left-hand corner of my framed picture.

We had to journal about someone in our family that is an inspiration to you. Journaling was to be between 25 and 50 words. Then end up clustering around the photo.

Journaling reads: My dad influenced me in many ways. He carried half of my genetic makeup and played a huge part of who I became, motivating me to face the world with courage, acted as a support pillar, guided me to stand independent, and was the role model for the man I chose for my husband.

The starter pistol fired and we are off and running in ADSR 6. Challenge 1 was sponsored by Digi Scrap Connect's brand new site. We were to create a layout listing six fun facts about our family and at least one photo of the family. I went with a simpler design on this layout. The papers were from Cinzia's Hello Spring, part of the The Digi files in March, along with grungelle brush from Brandie Valenzuela at ScrapGirls.com.

We've been married over 37 years and have two children, a son and a daughter. They have provided us with five grandchildren, with another one due in June.
Our children all live within two miles of our house and we get together frequently for dinner.
I am the family genealogist. I've been researching both my line and my husband's lineage for almost 25 years. My brother, who passed away 6 years ago, was very interested in my findings and helping me. He started a site for our paternal line and signed all his postings and emails with "Friends and Family Forever." Since his passing, I am carrying on the tradition.
My husband retired one year ago and his hobbies are radios (building them and ham radio) and N-Gauge railroads. He has yet to build his track, but has a bedroom stacked full of items he has purchased.
We like to go geocaching.
I'm a very picky eater.

Tutorial: How to Save Layouts for the Web in Photoshop: Design House Digital

Judy and I were discussing how we save our files for the Web this weekend. I just stumbled across this blog entry on How to Save Layouts for the Web in Photoshop from Design House Digital. It is similar to what I do, but still different. To avoid the "image exceeds the size" error message, she resizes it before selecting "save for web."

She goes to Image > Image Size and changes the height and width from 3600 x 3600 to something below 1000 x 1000 and also changes the resolution from 300ppi to 72ppi. When she changes the ppi to 72, the height and width of the image automatically changes to 864 x 864. Check out the tutorial for more information.

ADSR 5.7 - The Bucket List

I thought this one was hard - mostly because they said it had to be realistic - which considering the state of the economy, really puts a crimp in anyone's bucket list (unless you are young and have your whole life ahead of you). At my age, I've done many of the things I would have on my bucket list if I was writing this 30 years ago. Here is the LO I came up with - and my list. Hope it is readable. I made the little stick man and the bucket myself. First time I've tried that!

Challenge 9 -- OScraps

The first step of the challenge is to look at the color wheel. You and your partner must choose opposing colors on the wheel, so for example, if you pick blue, your partner must use orange. It should be the predominant color in the layout but it does not have to be the only color used. Please use THIS color wheel to make your selections. As long as you are using opposing colors, they do not have to be in the same band.

The second step is incorporate this quote in some way.

You can use any part of this quote as your inspiration. For example, you could make a layout about growing. You could make a layout about breaking the rules, etc. You can use any part of the quotes or words from the quote. The quote itself does NOT have to appear on your page.

Scrappers Online had the 3rd challenge of ADSR 5. The previous post links to the challenge and the requirements. Basically our layouts had to have a focal photo with selective coloring in it. I took this photo of my youngest grandchildren and selectively colored the pink shirt and denim coveralls and shirt.

The required parts were:

One focal photo with selective coloring
20 or more words of journaling with possible highlights (I didn't do the highlights)
At least one date element

The second stop in ADSR5 was Digital Artisan Guild. They have beautiful guild kits. They called it a recipe challenge. The recipe was a theme of 5 things I LOVE about...

Title: use a combination of 5 fonts and/or alphas (example: use 2 different fonts and 3 different alphas)

Photos: use 5 photos, one of the photos must have the number 5 in it!

Use 5 different elements of the same type (example: use 5 different flowers or 5 different buttons, etc.)

Season to taste: add ingredients from your digital pantry to make this layout your own!

Here is my layout:

The title was made using (1) Kaatie Pertiet's Baby Buddies Alpha, (2) font outlaw, (3) font Stereofidelic, (4) alpha from Digital Artisan's Best Laid Plans alpha, and font pristina.

Here is my first entry for this year's Race. For Debbie's LO I scraplifted, I used one from her personal blog about her favorite pet, Molly. I know she loves all 3 of her beagles but Molly is the oldest, and her dearest. Here is the journaling: "This is the second race that Debbie & I have been partners. We met on a scrapping site in 2008, discovering we lived in the same town. We have many things in common: we both love our animals & are married to our best friends. Scrapping offers our most common interest." I wanted to say so much more, about how we both love to travel and have been all over the US. How Debbie helped me create my blog and how she taught me so much when I was a scrapping newbie.

Surprise! The host of the first stop in the Amazing Digi Scrapping Race 5 was Natural Designs in Scrapbooking. This challenge was to create a layout about our partner, introducing her to the other racers. We could do it anyway we wanted to. We had to include at least one photo of our partner and we also had to choose one of their layouts and scraplift that as our page design.

Registration is open for another season of ADSR. Digi Chick Judy and I have sent in our registration and are awaiting approval. Lisa Kane, who designed our blinkie lst year, has modified it for this season. Please visit her blog.

Natural Designs in Scrapbooking (NDISB), has come up with a cool internet digital scrapping game that mirrors the TV reality show “The Amazing Race.” Teams of two traverse the digital scrapbooking world, site by site, completing challenges and collecting prizes along the way.

For this challenge, we had to work together as a team to create a single two-page layout, with each of us creating one half. Because you are each completing your own half of a two-page layout, there is no And because diversity is intersecting with Valentines Day in the ADSR Zone, our challenge was to create a two-page layout about the diversity of love.

We had to collaborate on our two-page layout and it had to coordinate. Both the overall design and color scheme/kit must coordinate.

Challenge 12

I forgot to post our layout for challenge 12. It was sponsored by {we are} storytellers and was an intersection, meaning Judy and I had to collaborate on one project. Here's the nitty gritty of this challenge: create a layout that expresses what storytelling means to each of us. Why did we each choose this form (scrapbooking in general and/or digital specifically) to tell our stories? Why is storytelling important? How do we feel about storytelling (is it a creative outlet, way to express your words, document your family's experiences, etc.) Why are we a storyteller? (We didn't have to answer all these questions, they were just food for thought and to give us an idea as to what we are looking for.)

Our story must include:

{we are} storytellers word-art, which was provided by the host site. We could alter the word-art if we wanted

At least 1/2 of the layout must be journaling, more the better

At least 5 elements/embellishements

No more than 2 pieces of paper

Only 2 small photos, 1 of each of us, placed in the bottom right hand area of our page.

Debbie did the actual layout and Judy did the journaling and provided the journaling paper. While working on this layout, Debbie provided Judy several different layouts for her input and she provided guidance and suggestions on the final layout.

Journaling reads:

There is a huge tradition of story-telling from my mother’s side of my family and manifested in me. As a kid, I used to sit quietly under the kitchen table while my mom and her sisters and sisters-in-law told stories about growing up in the 1920s and 1930s. My blog is “Family Stories and More.” I create layouts to go with the stories.

Debbie has never considered herself a storyteller. She scraps to save the photos for others to enjoy – the journaling has always been secondary to the pictures. Even though she does not consider herself a storyteller, she is the family historian, collecting data and entering it into her database which in turn, prints out a narrative listing the information collected. Her approach to journaling is more in line with Sergeant Joe Friday of 1950s “Dragnet” fame: “Just the facts, Madame, just the facts.”

Where we come together is in the joy of digital scrapping. Our reasons are similar for choosing digital scrapping: our pictures are already in digital format on our computers; we don’t have to make a mess with all the traditional scrapbooking supplies; digital scrapping is more mobile; and we both love technology. In digital scrapping, we have found a way to satisfy us both in spite of our differing strengths. Those differences have served us well during ADSR4 and we plan to continue working together for ADSR5!

Can't believe this race is almost done. The 11th stop on the Amazing Digital Scrapping Race was at Scrap Orchard. The challenge was if I could ask any one person (dead or alive; family, friend, famous or foe) one question, who \would it be and what would I ask them? The layout can have only ONE photo. The photo must either be of the person to whom you are posing the question OR must represent the question you are asking, and I had to include my question in the layout and the question could be the ONLY words/journaling on your layout.

Because I consider myself the family historian/genealogist, I went with a question we should all be asking our elders and/or scrapping about ourselves. Here is my layout:

Challenge was another "Roadblock" which means that only one of us had to actually produce a LO for the Challenge and it had to be the team mate who sat out the last Roadblock. That was me! We were to interview our Race partner, asking at least 5 questions, and create a LO with photo. The LO had to contain supplies from two designers - no more, no less - and the color scheme must consist mainly of 2 colors, with minor accent colors allowed. Here is the information on my LO:

1. What is your favorite mode of transportation when you travel and why?
I would probably say driving is my favorite mode because you get to see more of the country that way, your agenda is your own (stopping where and when you want), free to sing along with the radio without fear of injuring my neighbor's ears, and more room to spread out. Plus you don't spend a lot of your precious vacation time waiting around in airports.

2. To where have you traveled?
I have traveled in and through 29 of the 50 states: South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, Connecticut, and of course Iowa. That's a hard one. Anywhere I am, as long as my DH is there with me, is a great time. But to choose one would be probably Purto Vallarta or our wine country trip to California.

Lots of photography opportunities, beautiful scenery, and opportunity for relaxation.

Challenge 9 - Generations

You'll notice I'm leaving it for Debbie to explain what each challenge is requiring. She does such a good job! I have a studio photo of my 5 generations but I choose to use 5 separate photos - each photo was taken of the subject at approximately 18 yrs. of age. The photo of Gospava, my grandmother was actually her wedding picture and she was 14 yrs old. But the rest of us are all very close to 18. In the journaling I gave everyone's year of birth. Both my grandmother and mother passed away more than 12 years ago.

KB and Friends sponsored the 9th stop of the Amazing Digi Scrapping Race 4. Each racer had to complete this challenge. The theme for this challenge is Generations.

The scrapbook page must include:

Photos of at least two generations of family members (the more generations, the better). KB and Friends specializes in vintage and retro-style scrapbooking kits, we we were encouraged to dig out those old family photos.

Something metal, preferably, old metal.
At least one flower.
At least one vintage or retro-style element. It can be epherma (I still don't really understand what this means but it keeps popping up on all these challenges).

I scrapped a five generation photo taken in Vermillion, South Dakota on April 27, 2003, when the Jorgenson family gathered to celebrate Grandma Mabel's 107th birthday. In this photo is my husband's grandmother, father, our daughter, and her twin girls.

Grandma Mabel lived alone in her own home until shortly before this picture was taken. Her daughter Evelyn lived next door. Grandma drove her own car until she was 96 years old.

This is my layout for Challenge 8: Johnny had sent me the darling pictures taken on Cookie Decorating Day with the grandkids and was gracious enough to allow me to use them in my LO. I was in the process of composing a little ditty to put on the left side of the LO instead of the holly branch but I couldn't quite get it together. The first part went like this: "The cookies are made, time to head off for bed. May Christmas dreams dance through your heads." See what I mean? I'm sure no poet. Thought I'd just better leave it out. Hence the holly branch for balance. This was a relatively easy LO to think up, came into my head almost immediately that I wanted to use Johnny's photos. I was able to find a layout I felt comfortable "scraplifting" very quickly, too.

The eighth stop on the race was at oscrps.com. Because a lot of the individuals at Oscraps are "totally excited about the new season of American Idol" they decided to make their own version...Scrapping Idol.

The challenge was to scraplift a layout from the gallery of our scrappiing idol. I have chosen a layout from Kathleen 08's gallery at Digital Scrapbook Place. Kathleen just happens to be spotlighted this month. I chose this layout to scaplift.

Other requirements of this challenge included using a star somewhere on the layout (I used a star paper as one of my mats plus two stars to hold my pictures). In addition, had to use the word DREAM somewhere on the layout.

The next stop on the Amazing DigiScrap Race was at Inspiration Lane. This leg of the race was a ROAD BLOCK which meant only one of us particpated. I had to choose a layout from Judy's gallery and scraplift it using the following direction:

Take your chosen layout from your partners gallery and flip it either horizontally or vertically.
Now take the layout and rotate it 45 degrees.
You must use this "new" version as the sketch for your layout.
When creating your layout you must use the EXACT same number of items that your partner used in the original layout, no more, no less.

I flipped it horizontally and then rotated it 45 degrees counter clockwise. I counted five items on Judy's layout: background paper, 2nd piece of paper, photo, journaling, and swirls.

Debbie's Challenge #5

This challenge came from the digiVixen at Anita Stergiou Designs. I've never visited this site before but will be sure to visit again. The challenge was to create a layout that has no photos on it, but includes at least three different and separate photo frames. "Sometimes we have special thoughts, feelings and/or memories about a person or place or event or pet or whatever, but no photos. OR, we could be missing someone who has passed on or something that is no longer in our lives and would dearly love to be able to express that on a page."

When I read that, I thought Oh man (my grandson Luke's favorite phrase), I should have waited to do my layout about Jason until this week, but there was no way I was going to put myself through redoing that layout. But there is another person who has passed on that has been on my mind a lot lately, my brother Dennis, especially in light that his son and his wife had a baby a few days ago. So I decided to write him a letter. I never expected this race to make me reach deep down and journal about my feelings as I have had to do for a couple of these challenges.

Dear Denny,

I wanted to let you know that you are a Grandpa. I know you would have been so happy for James and Lindsey and I so wish you were here to meet her. They named her Ella Lorraine.

I miss you and think of you often. I miss our online chats and joint research projects. I have lost the zeal for genealogy since your passing as you were the only one really interested in what I found. Roger and I took up geocaching and when I’m out, I always think of you, knowing it would have been something you would have really loved.

The online Loghry Ledger that you started is still going strong. I will treasure the weekend we spent together at the Council Bluffs reunion forever and our trip home from California.

My brother and I were a great team. I was the family historian, collecting data on those who had gone before us, and he was the gatherer, finding family with the same name, rounding them up, creating a place on the Web for us to gather and share pictures, news, and history. The place he called the "Loghry Ledger" and it is hosted at MyFamily.com. We are still going strong. Denny would end each of his posts and email messages with his catch phrase, "Friends and Family Forever." His wife and son even put this on his stone.

My mother called them “The Boys”; I called them Uncle Dan and Uncle George. They were my heroes.

In December 1948, my parents moved us into a concrete block building they built for their new business. It became known in our family as “The Joint.” The building consisted of three rooms, a large “beer joint” area in the front half of the building and two rooms in the back for our apartment. The tiny living quarters consisted of a kitchen/eating area that also contained my daybed, and a bedroom for Mom and Dad with a bath attached.

That Christmas Eve both of my uncles were at the Joint playing shuffleboard while I watched. Finally, Mom made me go to bed, telling me Santa wouldn’t come as long as I was awake. Although I still wanted to believe in Santa, I was in kindergarten and had begun to hear whispering at school. I asked my uncles if Santa really existed. They assured me he did and promised to come get me so I could peek at Santa.

I was sound asleep when my uncles came rushing into the apartment waking me - Santa was here! They bundled me up in my blanket and carried me outside into The Joints parking lot. Santa was gone! “There he is! See the sleigh?” they pointed high into the night sky. “See? See?” But I couldn’t see the departing sleigh. We started to go back inside but my uncles gasped and pointed to proof that Santa had really been there. In the new fallen snow were imprints of the sleigh runners, reindeer hooves and Santa’s boot prints. That is why I believed in Santa for 2 more years.

Challenge 4 was to complete a layout with at least three things artsy and/or altered AND you must journal something from your soul. This is something that still hurts to this day which I never talk about.

I have spent the majority of my life married to my best friend. We have been very happy and have been blessed with 2 fantastic children. We have also suffered the loss of a child. Our son Jason was stillborn almost 31 years ago. This was a very hard time for me, and I still grieve and think of him often. We were given a chance to hold him, but it wasn't long enough. I never got a picture of him as we didn't expect I would be delivering him when I went to the hospital on Easter Sunday in 1978. I recently saw an article about photographers who photograph for parents their babies that have died; the hospitals call the photographers who then come to the hospital and take pictures for the family. Oh how I wish they did that back then. His birthday, which he would have shared with my brother, is always a very hard day for me. I visit his grave on his birthday and take him flowers.

Challenge 3 We were supposed to take the first layout we ever published anywhere on the Web and rework it. This was relatively easy since my very first posting was only in Dec. 2008 - not very long ago. Let me see if I can put the LO challenge 3 was built from.

The blue layout was my "first" layout ever published. In the process of adding this layout, I managed to wipe out the other 2 layouts I had put in. So I will try to re-load them. Okay, the lo with the light blue paper is my Challenge 3 entry. Rather than try to get Challenge 1 in here, I'm going to publish this and open a new post for it.

Stop #3: Gotta Pixel

The third stop in the ADSR 4 race was over at Gotta Pixel. It was a regular stop, which means that both Judy and I have to do our own layout. The challenge was to find the first layout I created that is still uploaded to a gallery and scraplift it using techniques, trends, and concepts that I have learned since doing the original layout. My first layout was at Gotta Pixel back in August 2006. Since I did this layout, I had a hard drive crash and lost the original .PSD file AND the actual photo. For this challenge, I scanned my layout that I had printed. The photo is a less than desirable, but all in all, I am pleased with my remake.

A challenge is considered complete when:
1. The challenge(s) have been completed by both teammates, unless otherwise noted, according to the challenge rules,
2. The challenge(s) are posted to each Racer’s main gallery, and
3. Each racer has posted a link to their official layout in this thread. Each team will have their own thread, based on their team number. As you post your layouts to the NDISB Gallery, please post a new reply in your thread with the link to those galleries. No need to send e-mail now. And each partner may post to the thread as they post their layout. BUT - BOTH POSTS NEED TO BE BEFORE THE DEADLINE! To eliminate confusion, we have posted a clock in the upper left-hand corner of the ADSR Blog with the time in New York..

Everyone who has completed Week One will qualify to continue racing during Week Two, and the fun begins all over again. THERE IS NO JUDGING, AND THE ONLY WAY TO BE ELIMINATED IS TO FAIL TO COMPLETE THE WEEK'S CHALLENGES.

We are off. It is 2:11 a.m. and I have stayed up to complete our first challenge. I hope I did everything right. If not, hopefully someone will tell me.

The first challenge was from Hummie (almost a neighbor to the Des Moines Digi Chicks in Missouri) and we are to rip and tear a photo into three or more pieces and use journaling on the layout. This is a challenge to be completed by both racers.

Less than 14 hours to the kick off for ADSR 4

It's a little 14 hours before the kick off for ADSR 4 and I am beginning to get scared of what I've got myself and Judy into. I saw one of the challenges from last year and oh my. I then found the "Can You Scrap This? The MOTHER Of ALL Challenges!!" over at NDISB and thought I'd give it a try to get warmed up for the Race.

Just saw a posting from Ernie, the site administrator over at NDISB, that as of right now we are up to 147 teams with six days of registration remaining. I'm getting anxious to start racing, wondering where all my travels will take me and what challenges are in store for us.

Hi, this is Debbie (Queen Shake-N-Bake), one-half of the "Two Digi Scrapping Chicks from Iowa." We are first time participants in the Amazing Digi Scrapping Race Season 4.

This is an Internet digital scrapping game based on the TV reality show, "The Amazing Race." As I understand it, Judy and I will be competing as a team and will "traverse the digital scrapping world, site by site, completing challenges and collecting prizes along the way." (This is from "The Amazing Digi Scrapping Race Season 4 blog at http://www.ndisb-adsr.blogspot.com/). If we complete the week's challenges in the time frame allotted, we move on to the next week where we will collect more prizes.

If we travel around the digiworld and complete each and every challenge, at the end of the race we will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize.
